Spain, 17 January 2009 I went for an appointment to the vet in Caleta with my puppies. As I was waiting in the waiting room I saw a folder with animals looking for a good home. I knew I should not even look at it, as I had already 3 dogs and 1 cat. I took the folder anyway and was happy none of the animals took my attention ... until ... my heart took a jump and I saw Caparos de Campos, Lince, a 6 years old Main Coon. I love Main Coons so asked immediately why this cat was in the folder. The receptionist Sylvia replied that the owner had lost her job and could not afford her 2 cats anymore and therefore was looking for good homes for them. One of the vets had taken the young white Persian and Lince was still available. I told her to call the lady and that I would come the next day to collect Lince. When I arrived the next day at the clinic the owner was already waiting, all I saw was a lot of fur and a huge cat in the container. I felt so sorry for him and took him, cuddled him and put him in the container I had brought. We exchanged everything I needed to know about Lince and received all his paperwork. We went home to my house in the mountains and all my dogs and Dominic the cat, his new brothers and sister. What an adventure. Now here comes his story, so sad.

Story

Caparos de Campo was born on the 3rd of
August 2003 in Siero, a village in Asturias
in Spain for the sole purpose of being
used as a show cat.
His certificate shows a long list of breeders
from the USA to South Africa.
Since his birth it seems that poor Lince (his
name changed several times since he left
the show business) was a show cat. His
papers show that he was successful at
that career. His papers also show that he
changed owners 5 times after he got
diarrhea and could not perform anymore. I
do not know how he was treated, but …
he did not have a normal cat behaviour
when he came to me. His fur was in a bad
condition, he had extreme diarrhea, could
not jump, nor run, nor play and did not
leave the small space in a big room which
he had made his own.

After many different diets, lots of love and attention from me and
my dogs, he jumps, sits in front of windows outside, even walks
outside, has an occasional difference with my other cat, Dominic,
asks loudly for food and enjoys laying on my lap where he purrs
happily. The bedroom is his territory and he calls for me to come
to bed, when I watch movies late. We all arrive in the bedroom
where Lince waits until everybody found his place, all of them
touching one part of my body, while Lince decides regularly that
either the best place is with his furry belly on top of my face or on
top of the doggies, but every morning I wake up and there he
lays next to me on the pillow, always touching me.

His first week in my house, I tried to shave him, but he almost got a heart attack and seemed extremely scared of the noise of the shaver, which I know, by the way, how to use, as I always had Persian cats. So who knows how much he suffered to be beautiful on stage! Cat owners will know what I mean, when I say: "I seldom see him smile" and when he does, it makes me extremely happy

So, I had to bring him
to the vet to be shaved
under narcoses, so he
would not be
traumatized again.
I had also discovered
that he suffered of
chronic diarrhea, which
was the reason that
poor Lince had changed
to so many different
owners, as nobody
wanted to pay the fat
bills of the veterinary
doctors.
As 10 years ago, with
Aztec, my Husky, who I
had found in Dubai, I
had taken on a
depressed pet, who
simply refused to be a
show cat ever again.
but … the diarrhea was still there, although sometimes less, sometimes more and I noticed the movements in his belly and that he did not really digest his food, as he needed to go to the litter box immediately after he had eaten. He was on different medications, but nothing helped. For a while I gave him one spoonful of yogurt in the morning, seemed to help a bit, but then after 2 weeks it was back to diarrhea again, then I was told to give raw meat, well I tried everything until I found an angel ..........

British friends here living on the campo, like me, had heard of this village doctor who seemed very good and caring, it was said that he would test samples in the
university. Of course I was sceptic, got his telephone number, made an appointment and took Lince there end of 2009. Wow, not only is he good looking, but he fell
instantly in love with Lince and spent exactly 75 minutes with him, while people were waiting in the waiting room. He told me that he had lived in the south of the
Netherlands, Limburg, to study there at the university. He also asked me to bring a stool from Lince on Monday so that he could send it to the university as he would
not give any medication unless he would know what poor Lince was suffering from, apart from depression. I did and 1 week later we had the result, a virus was
discovered which was not usually found in Spain and could be treated with medication, which we had to change a few times, as Lince refused to take them and was
blowing white bubbles from his mouth. He again spent much time with Lince, who had in the meantime an infection on his cheek. It had started with a small crust, from
which the doctor in Caleta had said that it was eczema, but in December it became worse and also the wound was tested and Mario made an HIV test, which was
negative. Oh, Lince hated the medicine as well the tablets as the creme, but slowly after 1 week I could report to Mario that Lince now could hold his stool for many
hours, that the colour had changed from light brown-yellow to a normal darkish brown colour. The bloody "excema" became worse and finally I stopped everything and
allowed the wound to dry out, it took 2 months to heal completely.
Now Lince sometimes has a softer stool, compared to before, he is now a healthy cat, thanks to Dr. Mario.
